how long should it take and can I abort it safely? : datarecovery

So since two days ago I couldn’t access my external SSD anymore with the error message “The file directory is corrupted or unreadable” popping up when I tried opening it.

Scanning it with some recovery tool only showed me a single directory, that I had planned to delete anyway.

So after some googling I found a suggestion to try chkdsk /f /r which I did. I left it running over night and after 34h it’s still going. I did some more searching and looks like it’s the /r flag that causes it to check every sector or something like that, and that’s what’s taking so long.

The output looks like this so I’m wondering what the number behind “Corruption was found while examining files in directory ” means. Because if it’s the number of sectors, I feel like I’ll still be waiting on it in a year if it goes on at this rate.

So the other question is: Is it safe to just Ctrl+C it? I’ve rad differing opinions on that online, but I don’t know if I really have another choice if it doesn’t finish anytime soon.
